Preference will be given in most situations to those applicants who hold teaching certificates and to those who have completed teacher preparation courses. A bachelor's degree is highly preferred. Other preferred requirements include proven effectiveness in working with school-age children in an instructional setting and dependability. Long-term substitutes (those who substitute more than 35 consecutive days in the same position) must have a valid Montana teacher certificate.

State law requires the District to contract a certified teacher to replace a teacher who has been absent for 35 consecutive days. Certified substitutes who are selected to teach during such an absence will be contracted beginning the 36th day of the teacher's absence. The substitute must be currently certified in the area of the teaching assignment. The contract will be issued at the appropriate level of education and experience in accordance with district hiring procedures. The district will not pay such substitutes retroactively.
